Product safety
All our products are compliant with all relevant UK, EU/EEA, Canadian and US product safety regulations. Our approach to safety is this:
- Before we launch a new necklace or bracelet, we consult an independent safety consultant to make sure we identify all relevant regulations and guidelines applicable to us.
- We then ask an independent and UK-accredited lab to test our necklaces and bracelets for us against these regulations. This is far more than most of our competitors do – even the most safety-conscious of them often only do sample or spot-testing, and place reliance on their suppliers for the rest. What we found, however, was that some suppliers claimed to be compliant (e.g. with EN71) whereas their certificate only covered some of the colours they sold (which means you can’t be sure that the colour in your necklace doesn’t contain dangerous chemicals).
- At Foss & Bjørn, we know how important safety is to you, so we independently test all colours and variations. There are two colours where we have relied on our supplier’s independent tests, and for these we have copies of the compliance reports from the accredited lab they used, confirming compliance for each specific colour.
- That means that every single bead, and all necklaces/bracelets in our collection, across all colours, have a traceable safety test associated with it. Our only exception, which we mention clearly on the product page, is the Mystery Box. The Mystery Box necklaces are usually test designs that didn’t make the final cut (which is also why we sell them at over 50% off).
Our safety certificates are available for inspection to all current and prospective customers — an extract is included on each product page, and please contact us if you’d like to see a full copy.
These types of necklaces have small parts and a long cord that can be dangerous to children and adults if not designed and made following the right procedures, and not all manufacturers use raw materials that are chemically safe; it’s therefore important that you confirm that the place you buy from has had their products and the materials they are made from independently verified as safe. Many unfortunately only self-certify or rely on claims of compliance from their suppliers that may or may not be accurate. Therefore, whether you buy from us or not, please always stay safe and confirm that the place you buy from has the right safety certificates in place specifically for the product and colour combination you’re buying.
Consumer safety is complex, so this reliance on self-certification might also mean that someone claims to be “compliant with EN71” – but you really need to confirm which parts of EN71 they are claiming compliance with.
Our products are not toys, but can safely be played with by children (necklaces can be played with while an adult is wearing them). Remember to remove all packaging before giving products to a baby or a small child. Safety instructions are included with all our products; please retain for future reference when you receive your parcel and we’re always happy to answer any question you might have.
